For starters, Medicare is the government health care program offered to people 65 years and older. This shouldn’t be confused with Medicaid, which offers health coverage for low-income individuals of all ages.

You’re eligible for Medicare if you’re at least 65 and a US citizen, or a permanent legal resident for the past five consecutive years.

Here are three of the most common myths and misconceptions about Medicare that you need to know about.

You Can Enroll at Anytime

If you’re receiving Social Security benefits when you turn 65 you will be automatically enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B. If you want to enroll in Part D you will need to enroll yourself. If you’re not receiving Social Security benefits you’ll need to enroll yourself to be covered by Medicare Part A and/or B.

This initial enrollment period is 7 months starting 3 months before you turn 65 and ends 3 months after you turn 65. Once this time has expired you will need to wait for open enrollment which is Oct. 15 - Dec. 7 unless you qualify for special enrollment.

Medicare & Medicaid Are the Same

As we stated in the introduction Medicare is offered to individuals at least 65 years of age or those with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and other conditions. Medicaid provides health care coverage to individuals with low income.

Medicare Doesn’t Cover Prescription Drugs

Medicare Part D helps to cover the cost of prescription drugs. You can join a Medicare drug plan in addition to Original Medicare or by joining a Medicare Advantage Plan with drug coverage. Plans that offer Medicare drug coverage are run by private insurance companies that follow strict rules set by Medicare to protect individuals. However, you must choose a plan that covers your current prescriptions.
